
For purists, there has been an ongoing controversy on whether fashion can be considered as an art form, or if clothes can be art. Perhaps the dire need to separate the two comes from the innate humane desire to classify things. But for one of the most progressive designers, Hussein Chalayan, he stands somewhat ambivalent on the topic– that in most cases, fashion is not art; except for his own upcoming project and solo exhibition at the Spring Projects, “B-Side”.

Announced a month ago in the beginning of August, the collaborative short film between Proenza Schouler and Harmony Korine has finally debuted online today. When the duo behind the label, Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough approached Harmony to create a short film to showcase its Fall/Winter 2010, Korine agreed and drew inspiration from the label’s painterly collection, which carries the aesthetics of artist, Christopher Wool. When Korine saw the collection, he thought about youth, freedom, acting the fool, and soul-searching through that. The short film was filmed at the projects in Korine’s hometown of Nashville Tennessee, and the girls cast in the film were authentic delinquents, who live up to the narrator’s story, There is a sense of nihilism thrown in with youthful rebellion, laced with philosophical wonder and a strong sense of individuality– everything about the youth that Hernandez and McCollough aimed to explore through its collection as well. The cast was styled by Mel Ottenberg, and the film, alongside with interviews with both the designers and Korine are available online now.
